Thoughts/Feelings/Behaviors
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy that is based on the idea that our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are all linked. CBT works by helping you identify distorted or unhelpful thinking patterns, recognize and change inaccurate beliefs, modify your behaviors, and develop coping skills. The goal of CBT is to help people become more mindful of their thoughts and feelings and to learn how to take control. It is a collaborative, goal-oriented approach.
From our early experiences in life, we develop what are called Core Beliefs. These beliefs help us make sense of the world by helping us know what to expect. Problems arise when we let negative core beliefs continue guiding our lives, leading us to fall into distorted thinking and unhealthy cycles. The ultimate goal of CBT is to help individuals learn to manage their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors more effectively, adjust our distorted thinking, and exit harmful cycles.
